Dahlia Tuber Order FAQs

When will the sale open?

January 1st at 9 am CST

Prior to opening to the public, email subscribers will receive a password to shop early.

When will the tubers ship?

We begin shipping late March/early April, depending on the weather. We ship to the warmest zones first, aiming to have all tuber orders shipped by May 15th.

Your order will ship as soon as possible once the threat of freezing temperatures has passed.

Can I pick up my order at your farm?

We offer a spring sale pickup day on the farm (La Farge, Wisconsin) on the last Saturday in April.

As part of the excitement of picking up your dahlia tubers, you will also be able to get your hands on rooted cuttings that were lovingly tended all winter —very sought-after varieties, on a first-come, first-served basis.

After our spring pickup date, we will take our plants and any leftover dahlia tubers to the local farmer's market, which is held every Saturday starting in May in downtown Viroqua, Wisconsin.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is a flat rate of $21.90 for all orders, regardless of order size. Orders will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail.

Offering a single flat rate streamlines our shipping and packaging processes and enables combined shipping (see note below).

Tubers will be carefully packaged in vermiculite to help prevent moisture buildup. Each tuber will be individually wrapped in a breathable package. We also generously pad your entire order to avoid damage during transit.

Dahlia tuber orders of $250 or more qualify for free shipping at checkout! Free shipping applies to dahlia tubers only; dahlia seeds and other merchandise ship separately.

After you've snagged your unicorn dahlias, or you realize you have more planting room than you realized, or we restock a variety you initially missed out on and want to place a subsequent order, we do offer combined shipping!

Use the code "moredahliasplease," and any subsequent dahlia tuber orders you place will be combined into a single package. If your combined order total reaches or exceeds $250, we will refund your initial shipping cost.

Note: if you use the free shipping code on your first order, it will be cancelled, and you risk losing those tubers. Only 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-, etc., tuber orders are eligible for the combined free shipping option.

Local pickup on our farm is available on the last Saturday in April.

What should I know before placing my order?

What You’re Agreeing to When You Purchase Dahlia Tubers from Cassell Hollow Farm

We’re thrilled to share our dahlias with you! We have been collecting dahlia varieties over the years and are proud to offer an extensive collection of over 150 varieties.

When you place a dahlia tuber order through Cassell Hollow Farm, you acknowledge and agree to the policies outlined below. We’ll always do our best to provide healthy, viable tubers—and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate the unpredictable nature of farming.

Some flexibility may be extended at our discretion, but here’s what to expect:

Dahlia Ordering Options

We sell individual dahlia tubers, not clumps. Prices and availability are listed on our website, and unless otherwise noted, the price listed applies to one tuber of the specified variety.

Cancellations

We typically do not accept order cancellations unless there’s a significant issue on your end and the order is not scheduled to ship within the next week. If we approve a cancellation, a 20% restocking fee will apply to cover handling and inventory adjustments.

Changes to Orders

To avoid confusion or mistakes, we do not accept changes to orders once they have been placed. Please double-check your cart before proceeding to checkout.

Shipping & Delivery Expectations

Once your package leaves our hands and is in the carrier's care, we are not liable for delays, damage, loss, or freezing during transit.

Your tracking number enables you (and us) to track the delivery. If tracking confirms the package was delivered, we consider the order fulfilled.

Order Issues

Please open your package right away and inspect the contents. Tubers should be stored properly and not left sitting in the box.

If you encounter an issue with your order, please email us (info@cassellhollowfarm.com) within 24 hours of delivery and include a photo so we can assist you. This time frame helps us verify what happened and resolve the issue as effectively as possible. If your concern is related to rot or soft tubers, we may ask for a short video.

All orders will ship with tracking to confirm status, location, and delivery.

We’ll respond as quickly as we can—usually within 24–48 hoursespecially during peak shipping season.

What to Expect from Our Tubers

Tubers come in many shapes and sizes, and all can produce beautiful plants. Some are plump, some are small and twisted. Many are the size of a thumb or an AA battery, which is ideal for quick root development.

All tubers will ship with a viable neck and confirmed eye!

If a tuber has an eye and the tissue is healthy, it will grow. Tubers will lose some moisture in transit, and although they do not need to be rehydrated in any specific way, slightly soft tubers should be planted as soon as possible. Minor imperfections, such as a nick from a digging fork, missing skin, a curved shape, or a cut end do not affect viability.

If you genuinely believe the tuber is too damaged to grow, let us know. In some cases, you may need to mail it back (at your expense) for a replacement.

Bloom Surprises

Despite our best efforts, if a tuber blooms incorrectly (not true to type), please be assured that it was never intentional. Mistakes can happen during harvesting or labeling. We will gladly work with you to make it right, usually by offering a replacement tuber the following season (and you can keep the fun surprise tuber). We will ask that you provide a photo of the bloom, a photo of your garden space with all blooms, and your order info so we can verify.

Virus Policy

While we guarantee there are no apparent viruses or issues with any of the tubers we ship to you, we do not offer refunds or replacements for plants suspected of having a virus after the tuber has been planted in your garden.

We sanitize any cutting tools between plants and discard any plant or tuber that shows even the slightest hint of concern. While we inspect each plant closely and discard anything that appears concerning, even virus-free stock may not show the signs of a virus (once infected) for a year or more. This is an inherent risk in all dahlia cultivation.

Our "pick your own" field, which we have named The Rainbow Row on our farm, is the only option that anyone but our team is allowed to cut, and the tubers from The Rainbow Row are kept entirely separate from our production rows. Rainbow Row tubers are never shared or sold. Dahlia seeds harvested from The Rainbow Row are offered for sale, but we have confirmed with a scientific research team that the seeds do not inherit any virus genes from the mother plant.

Please be wary of claims that any dahlia stock is “guaranteed virus-free.” There is no such guarantee in open-field growing.

We’re All Human

Please refrain from using profanity or rude language in your emails. We’re here to help, and we want to maintain a respectful, kind exchange with all our customers.

Please note:

- We can’t respond to emails sent solely to express disappointment that an item has sold out. We know it’s a bummer.

- If an item becomes unavailable due to a storage issue or another unforeseen event before your order is shipped, we will notify you and issue a full refund for that item. We will never send an unexpected substitution.

If you have any grievances, please get in touch with us directly before posting complaints or negative reviews online—we would like the opportunity to make things right.

Final Notes

We begin shipping in late March, weather permitting. We will begin shipping to the warmest states first and will monitor your location for freezing temperatures before shipping.

We reserve the right to refuse service, particularly in cases of repeated policy violations or public complaints made without prior contact.

Thank you for growing with us—we’re so grateful to share our love of dahlias with you.
